What You Need to Know About Hospital Workstation Ergonomics

Few workers put the time and energy into their jobs like those in healthcare institutions and hospitals. Working long hours, with people sometimes pulling 16-hour shifts, means that reducing the risk of injury and fatigue is a critical factor for both productivity and employee well-being.

One of the most significant elements of this process is designing workspaces that are ergonomic for the people using them most often.

Distribution Systems International designs and sources hospital workstations that are centered around ergonomics. We strive daily to serve the people that are working hard to serve others.

By providing hospital teams with workstations that allow them to work without strain, their days are far less tiring. The patient room can already be a hectic enough place and the last thing workers need is equipment that's physically difficult to use.

Workstations that adapt to their users and the situation at hand can make all the difference. For a custom hospital workstation quote, contact DSI today.

What Do Ergonomics Have to Do with Hospital Workstations?

Hospital workstations come in many designs and configurations for the numerous workflows within the organization. Increasing access is a key part of the solution, but the benefits don't end there.

For example, a workstation on wheels provides mobility for items like medications, monitors, computer equipment, and batteries. Rather than workers having to lug these items around by hand, a mobile cart can help transport all of the resources healthcare workers need to complete their tasks.

Ergonomics plays a vital role in the medical industry because of the long hours workers often put in, but also because the job can be physically strenuous. When workers already struggle with physical fatigue and sore muscles from days filled with lifting and maneuvering patients, any help makes a massive difference.

Workstations designed to make the jobs of nurses less physically demanding plays an important role in patient care, as they help ensure the best treatment possible.

Applying Ergonomics in Healthcare Environments

Ergonomic hospital workstations have a few key characteristics that set them apart from traditional ones. Lightweight chassis designs make it far easier to move these workstations to ideal locations for completing the task at hand.

Drawers can also be specified in the design to provide instant access to critical supplies. Durable stainless steel surfaces require less effort when deep cleaning to prevent bacteria buildup on medical carts and mobile workstations.

Whatever the workflow is, considering the human aspect of the process helps designers of workstations customize everything from standing desks to registration stations.

Importance of Ergonomic Hospital Workstations

Hospital workstations that focus on ergonomics help clinicians and physicians be more efficient in their workflow while providing more support while they stand.

Workstations that feature adjustable heights and caster wheels help these staff members maintain healthy postures all day long. No matter the position in the organization, ergonomics is a leading factor in the success of hospitals and healthcare institutions.

Accessories to Create Ergonomic Workstations

While ergonomic workstations are a key element of outstanding healthcare institutions, they aren't the only thing to consider. The type of chair, keyboard, and monitor are also crucial elements that help workers fill out documentation with less neck strain, wrist strain, and back pain during extended shifts.

Every manufacturer of these accessories chooses their own technology for carving out their place in the market, so be sure that ergonomics is a top priority in their design departments.

Similarly, drawer accessories like dividers and folders for important documentation help prevent administrative healthcare employees from straining when they need to search for a hard-to-find document or medical supplies that are few in number.

Whatever the role of the healthcare professional, ergonomics is essential to success.

Increase Your Hospital Staff’s Productivity with Ergonomic Workstations

Endless studies by productivity experts have proven the benefits of carefully considered ergonomics. While the effort needed to make small movements like reaching for supplies or paperwork may seem trivial, awkward, asymmetrical body positioning can add up over the course of a workweek.

Keep in mind that these tiny impediments to production often occur across entire facilities, leading to increased labor costs or even injuries that require worker's compensation claims. That's why intelligent hospital operations managers search for every point of pain team members suffer due to sub-par workstation solutions.

Let’s Give Your Hospital Workstations and Staff the Ergonomics they Deserve

Making the lives of healthcare workers easier starts with superior ergonomics. But what's even more crucial is finding a company that can deliver superior service when sourcing workstations that better serve employees.

That's why we offer consultations to help uncover possibilities for improving ergonomics and ultimately, the efficiency of your operation. Our mission is to serve clients who serve others.

Discover the Distribution Systems International difference by scheduling a consultation about improving the ergonomics in your patient rooms, and the areas your doctors and nurses provide treatment.
